Good Habits That Will Help You Get Healthier in New Year 2020


Every new year offers excitement for a fresh beginning, a new motive and new resolution. Everyone looks forward to start a new slate. With all the parties and celebration, it is also an important to recommit to a good health and lifestyle. New year resolutions are fun to make but quite difficult to maintain. This new year, pick some of the following worthy resolutions, stick with them, and stay healthy.


KICKSTART YOUR 2020 WITH A HEALTHY LIFE-STYLE?

1. GET SEVEN HOURS SLEEP

According to the National Sleep Foundation, the seven to nine hours of sleep is important to keep the brain sharp, energy level high and mood cheerful.

2. TAKE A COLD SHOWER

Surely hot shower will feel like a luxury in a chilly wintry days, but actually, it’s a cold shower that can provide a chain of benefits. One cold shower a day can improve body circulation, enhance metabolism, tightens skin pores, and boost immunity. To ease the way, one can alternate between a hot shower and a cold shower.

3. EAT WITHOUT DISTRACTIONS

For many people, mealtime is multi-tasking. People scroll through Facebook, Instagram, and other social medias while eating or are busy working on something else. Mindful eating is just the opposite. Paying attention to the eating experience, recognizing your hungriness, aroma, flavour, and texture of foods is known as mindful eating. When we eat mindfully, we naturally slow down and experience improved digestion. To become a mindful eater, one must avoid gadgets and electronics.

4. BREATHE INTO YOUR BELLY

Most of the people take shallow breaths, inhaling just as much amount of oxygen they need to stay alive. Breathing deeply into your belly for only 5- 10 minutes per day manages blood pressure, improves sleep quality, slows down aging, and improvise mental focus. To do so, you need to lie down, close your eyes, think good and positive thoughts and take deep and long breaths into your belly – Inhale and Exhale. To raise focus, one can place a heavy object on their belly and notice the rise and fall on each breath.

5. EAT DARK CHOCOLATE

According to many studies, a small amount of dark chocolate is good for the heart, brain, and the overall health. It can reduce the risk of heart diseases. Dark chocolate is also helpful in boosting moods.

6. AVOID SITTING STILL

Do you sit on a desk or stand at a counter all day long in a still and same position?
If so, the body may feel chronic stiffness, pain in the back, neck, shoulder, or feet. The human body is designed for movement. Hence if the body starts to complain when staying still for a long time, it should not be a surprise. Always aim to move different body parts every 20-30 minutes. Take a short break when staying in the same position and move around a little.

7. LOOK INTO DISTANCE

When looking near, the ciliary muscles of the eyes contracts and stay that way. Gradually these muscles tire, trigger eye strain, and cause headaches. However, when looking at a distance, most of the ciliary muscles got relaxed. Therefore, if you are glued to the laptop, computer, phone, television, book, etc. for 20-30 minutes, make a habit of taking a break for 20 seconds and try to look at a far distance. A rule which is important says that for every 20 minutes spent on the screen, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

8. TAKE THE STAIRS

This is probably the easiest swap one can make in getting a healthier lifestyle. Using stairs instead of lifts and escalators get the circulation up and promote a healthy heart. On top of that, it is a wonderful glute workout.

9. DRINK WATER

There are health benefits of drinking the right amount of water. It helps to regulate body temperature, lubricates, and cushions the joints. It also helps in spinal cord protection, getting rid of body wastes by urination, and sweat. It also hydrates the body. 

10. LEARN SOMETHING NEW

The connection between the nerve cells in the brain multiplies with age, but only if it is kept engaged with new information. So try to learn something new.

11. AT EVERY HOUR TAKE A WALKING BREAK

Sitting in the same position for a longer period not only makes you unproductive, but by doing so, you are compromising your physical and mental health. The human brain is not good at focusing for an extended period, and the human body is not designed to sit all day. At every one period, take a walk break for at least five minutes. Doing so increases blood flow in the brain.

12. MEDITATE

Meditation calms our mind and soul. Take 10-15 minutes to meditate daily. It has countless benefits.

13. STOP SMOKING

Smoking is always harmful to health. It increases the risk of lung cancer, oesophageal cancer, and kidney cancer, heart disease, and more. If you are a smoker, take a new resolution to quit it. If you don’t smoke, keep it up!

14. HAVE YOURSELF A HEARTY LAUGH

From boosting the immune system and lowering stress to preventing heart disease and reducing pain, laughter is the best medicine. Laughter is considered one of nature’s best medicine for mental as well as physical state.

15. GET REGULAR HEALTH CHECKUPS
